Off-the-shelf software is faster to start; custom software fits better. Five questions to help you choose the right path.
There is no universally right answer. Many businesses run perfectly well on packaged ERP. Others spend years fighting software that was never built for how they work. These questions help you tell which camp you are in.
1. How unusual are your core processes?
If your pricing, production or approval rules are what set you apart, forcing them into a generic template costs more than it saves.
2. How many workarounds do you already have?
Count the spreadsheets, WhatsApp groups and manual steps that exist because your software can't do something. Each one is a hidden cost.
3. What will licences cost at your next stage of growth?
Per-user pricing that looks modest at 30 users can look very different at 300.
4. Do you need to connect many systems?
If your business depends on dealer portals, logistics partners, government portals and Tally all working together, integration effort may dominate either way.
5. Can you start with a hybrid?
Often the best answer is to keep your accounting system, and build custom modules and an intelligence layer around it. You get fit where it matters without rebuilding everything.
